From here, a quote I think is relevant in so many situations besides baseball:

The odd thing about baseball — about professional sports, generally — is how many intelligent men, who made fortunes with their brains before buying a sports team, forget everything they’ve known in the (usually) vain grab for short-term success.
Some of them eventually figure it out.
Some of them lose many millions of dollars and many hundreds of games, and are forced to sell their team.
