A Network Security Perspective on the Cardinals/Astros Data Breach

From 2013-2014 a St. Louis Cardinals employee illegally accessed the computer networks and player evaluation database of the Houston Astros. The case wound its way through federal court and Monday, ultimately resulted in a financial penalty to the Cardinals (in addition to jailtime for the offender himself).

Yesterday at FanGraphs, I used my network security background to explain why the Astros didn’t catch this unauthorized access while it was occurring.
